It seems that you can’t go anywhere without hearing about the poor economic climate these days, and the toy store is no exception. Toy sales fell 3% in 2008, a modest number compared to many other industries, but still a multi-billion dollar impact. Americans are still buying products, but they’re just being more careful and buying less. Here are a few tips on buying toys for your children without splurging too much, which will keep children and their parents.

Dollar Sale

Toys ‘R Us recently created a value section in the front of each of its stores that offers a variety of toys for $3 or less. The company isĀ  showcasing about 100 affordable items, mostly playthings like rings, coloring books, and dress-up items that are priced to meet children’s allowances. This is a great way to teach your children the importance of money. Though the toy may not be as elaborate or fancy as some others in their collection, they will feel excited and proud that they “bought” it. Dollar stores are another great place for toys, and even craft stores like Michaels are offering fun kids craft kits for a dollar.

Keep it Simple

One of the biggest trends in toys this year is affordability. Toys have become increasingly complex and electronic, and toy manufacturers are placing more emphasis on simple and less expensive toys. Expect to see a lot more popular toys for $30 or under this year. A number of the top selling toys last holiday season were at lower price points (i.e. Bakugan and Club Penguin Plush) so all manufacturers will be putting a greater emphasis on delivering lower price products.

Action figures from movies have been big sellers; last year Iron Man and Batman action figures were very popular and this year action movies like Star Trek, Wolverine, Terminator Salvation and GI Joe are expected to release lots of action figures. Keep your eyes open for the best values and deals, and if necessary, try to limit your children to one franchise this year. If your kids have to have them, try to wait a little while. These items tend to go on sale after the movie leaves the box office and collectors grab them up. Or get the most basic action figure, not the more expensive ones with playsets and action vehicles.

Shop Online

You might think that you have found a great deal on a toy in a discount store, but do your homework online too. Many sites offer a even lower discounts, especially on sale items, because they do not have the overhead cost of operating a store front. However, don’t forget to factor in shipping costs, if applicable, when doing your research.
